  • Merritt Clifton Nearly 20 years ago, when I began logging fatal & disfiguring dog attacks in India, much as I log them here in the U.S. and Canada, attacks by non-rabid dogs were practically unheard of -- and practically all dogs in India were street dogs. These days, the number of rabies fatalities averages under 300 per year (the commonly cited estimate of 20,000 dates to 1908), the street dog population is less than half of what it was before the national Animal Birth Control program began in 2003, and the popularity of keeping dogs as pets has increased to the point that perhaps 40% of the dogs in India have homes or at least regular feeders. Along with this has come an explosion in dog bites and, as a subset of this, fatal and disfiguring attacks. Part of this is that pet dogs learn to be territorial to an extent that street dogs cannot afford to be. Another part is that pit bulls and dogfighting have emerged in India, especially in the Bangalore area. There is still a reflexive tendency in Indian media and politics to attribute any dog incident to "strays," but reality is that the "strays" of today who are attacking people are mostly pets running amok, and many of the killer dogs are in fact pit bulls running amok.

  • Julia Lewis This is ruining things for the ordinary street dogs. No doubt they will round them up and get rid of them all soon.
