Volunteer mauled by pit bull at Kenai Animal Shelter

The attack came without warning. One minute, Kay Best was putting a five-year-old pit bull back into its kennel at the Kenai Animal Shelter. The next, she was shoving her arms in front of her face as it lunged at her throat.

  Penny Spears My son was bitten by a pit at his local shelter where he volunteered. The dog was one he walked regularly, because it was big. One day for no reason it latched onto his forearm. He was glad it was him, and not one of the women, he's a bodybuilder and wrenched it off his arm. The dog was put down, so at least they weren't in denial.

  Carol Miller This is not an uncommon event. Happened in Ohio about a year ago. A Florida vet clinic was mauled to the point of amputation of an arm. That attack looks to cost the insurance carrier of the AVMA a million and a half dollars. In 2005 the ASPCA put out a powerpoint for internal use only to educate shelter workers. In 1993 the AVMA wrote a 40 page book for the same purpose.

  Jan Smith This is why only pit freaks work or volunteer in shelters nowadays. I have a collection of stories from shelter people where I live who were bitten by a pit type -- then they got banned from the shelter when they complained, told anyone, or wanted the biter put down. there is huge pressure to keep these in-shelter attacks a secret. Huge pressure not to object about a biting or attacking pit bull being placed.

  Jane Shryock Jan, you're right. That's exactly why I don't voulenteer in shelters anymore, unless I'm working exclusively with cats. It's also why I turned down an otherwise fantastic vet tech school back when my health was good enough to work.

  Joseph Angelo "It could have been any dog but it was a pit bull." Yup. So weird how it is usually a pit/pit mix huh? How about when she says "It isn't the dog's fault." I wasn't even educated about this topic when my daughter was attacked and the first thing I told her sister on the way to the hospital was: "It is no one's fault but the DOG's."

  Paris Wolf The pitbull type dogs are a danger to any one that works in animal shelters and handles these dogs. Glad I got out of my shelter gig before these dogs became so popular. Never was a fan of the aggressive fighting breeds, even back then.

But it was a dog and it could have been any kind of dog, but it was a pit bull,” she said." Sounds like her rescue minded friends have already thrown her under the bus, and that she's heard the, 'sorry you were mauled, but my pit is sweet and don't blame the breed...'" The sad truth is, nowadays, if you get attacked by a pit bull, YOU will be blamed. Poor creature will probably be ostracized from rescue for speaking out.

  Laurie Anne Animal shelters have a tough mission. Its evolved that they have become pit bull warehouses. The only staff and volunteers that they will be able to retain will have to be devotees of the grinning wigglebutt cult, and those folks are advocating pit bull ownership by just about anyone, because "all dogs are alike." We saw a bizarre example of this when Western Pennsylvania Humane Society reacted to the local mauling death of a two year old by posting photos of grinning wigglebutts in tutus. It's getting harder and harder to support them. I want to see pit bulls and other molossers humanely treated, but I strongly object to them being pushed on people as an ideal family pet. Amish puppy mills are prospering, because people can't stand to go to shelters full of pit bulls, and made to feel bad because they choose not to adopt a pit bull because of their "ignorance" and "racism."

  Sonya Del Rio Cerezo Pitbull apologists are in a serious state of denial. As the death/maiming numbers rise, more people will become angry & want something done. They can't pull the wool over people's eyes forever, it's just a matter of time before people wake up & demand something be done. 
  The sad part is the lives that will be lost/ruined before reaching that point.

Hopefully witnesses from the previous town will speak up at are most likely lies from the family who surrendered it. It's never the first time with shelter pits, they are there for a reason .

  AJ Ravinsky I've been an animal welfare activist for 35 years, and have worked in shelters (pre-pitbull days), and now run a rescue (animals other than dogs and cats). But truthfully if I wanted to adopt a dog now, in 2015 (which I don't), I would go to a licensed, reputable breeder. You can't trust what shelters say, because if they will fudge and even lie to push pits out the door, they might do that with other problem dogs too. I got burned with adopting a cat a few years ago, whereby they "neglected" to tell me all the facts on her until after the contract to adopt was signed.
